Horse training

Walking into this large indoor horse arena in the Dufur Valley from the bright outdoor sunshine, my first thought was that it was just way to dark for good photography. Once my eyes adjusted, and I started metering and checking settings, I realized that it was really quite bright: Large skylights and large open doors gave a rather beautiful light to the entire arena. In this photo I’ve captured the emotion and action involved in the work, a rather fleeting moment as most of the time was spent giving verbal guidance to the riders.

The riders were members of the Wasco County Posse, a volunteer group that provides additional security at the Wasco County fair and ride in local parades. It was fascinating to watch how a horse could be trained, with patience and perseverance, to overcome fear and misunderstandings.

I love the look on her face. The sheer joy of what she’s doing. A wonderful photo, bro.

I love the way you’ve caught her expression. She obviously loves what she’s doing–and has a great affection for both horse and rider.

    Wonderful photo, Mark!
