Picture of the week

Girl on tractor

A young girl takes the wheel of a tractor as the driver secures her hat against the wind during the Cherry Festival Parade. Copyright Mark B. Gibson/The Dalles Chronicle

I find parades and festivals exhausting to cover. There is a great deal going on, and it seems that editors want every event and every entry photographed. On top of that, traffic is bad, the newspaper parking lot hosts an antique car show and I had back-to-back assignments before and after the parade.

Which is why the “picture of the week” is coming out on Tuesday, instead of Saturday.

The little girl was quick to take the wheel when the driver’s hat almost blew off, and was telling her that she could certainly drive the tractor… which is probably true: All she has to do is learn to keep her eyes on the road ahead.

The expression of sheer joy on her face speaks volumes. We should all be so thrilled for an opportunity to drive an old tractor!

Years ago I did a lot of tractor work, discing and planting and fertilizing the fields around my rental. They are much funner then cars, I think.

The look on that little girl’s face has set me off for a great day today! What a wonderful shot!
