In the winter the Bald Eagle is the most common large raptor on the Columbia River. In spring they leave the area, Osprey and Turkey Vultures return to patrol the river, nesting nearby. Gulls can be seen throughout the year. By mid summer, rocks and islands will be covered with the white gulls, many from a colony established on an island just upstream from the mouth of the Deschutes River.
